The core of PCC's Piano program is three-fold:
- Individual Instruction
- Piano Ensemble and Piano Accompanying
- Class Piano (Keyboard Skills and Beginning Through Intermediate Class Piano)
Individual piano instruction is available to students playing at the college level who successfully pass an audition. Lessons are intended for both students who are advanced piano performance majors and music majors who are using piano as their principal instrument.
In addition to their lessons, students meet weekly in a recital hours class with other applied students to perform for each other and to study the art and craft of performing.
The Piano program has hosted masterclasses including master teachers such as James Bonn from the University of Southern California, Ruth Tomfohrde from the University of Houston, and extended residencies with Ann Schein and Boris Slutsky from the Peabody Conservatory as well as Jerome Lowenthal from the Juilliard School.
PCC piano majors have come from throughout Southern California and several other countries including Armenia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, and Ecuador. Our students have won prizes at competitions like the University of the Pacific Piano Competition and the Performing Arts Foundation for Asian-Americans while at PCC.
